Morphological decomposition supports word recognition in primary school children learning to read: evidence from masked priming of German derived words

چکیده

Background When reading a word, skilled adult readers automatically decompose the word into its separate morphemes by processing word's morpho-orthography. In children, however, it still remains unclear when and how they start to words morphemes. Methods To better understand primary school children learn integrate automatic morphological processes their reading, we conducted masked priming experiment with n = 218 first fourth graders control group of 36 readers. Participants saw prime on computer screen for 67 ms, followed lexical decision task. For each target constructed three words: an unrelated prime, semantic test prime. The was either morpho-semantically, morpho-orthographically or purely orthographically related word. We analysed error rates reaction times linear mixed-effects models combinations. Results analysis revealed one significant interaction in morpho-semantic condition graders. time different effects depending age group: second showed no effects, while third condition, adults both morpho-orthographic condition. Conclusions conclude that (i) written based words' morpho-orthography, (ii) detect stems morphologically complex forms but do not rely representations (iii) show indication these processes. Our results are theoretically consistent ‘semantic view’ within localist account can be explained edge-aligned embedded activation.

Masked Morphological Priming in German-Speaking Adults and Children: Evidence from Response Time Distributions

In this study, we looked at masked morphological priming effects in German children and adults beyond mean response times by taking into account response time distributions. We conducted an experiment comparing suffixed word primes (kleidchen-KLEID), suffixed nonword primes (kleidtum-KLEID), nonsuffixed nonword primes (kleidekt-KLEID), and unrelated controls (träumerei-KLEID). The pattern of pr...

Bilingual visual word recognition: Evidence from masked phonological priming

A number of recent developments in the research on bilingualism and visual word recognition have convinced me that the time is ripe to integrate both topics. As many of the developments were due to the use of the masked priming paradigm, the present book may indeed be the ideal outlet to summarise the main findings in these research areas and to discuss some of the ongoing integration work. Fir...

Evidence for Early Morphological Decomposition: Combining Masked Priming with Magnetoencephalography

Are words stored as morphologically structured representations? If so, when during word recognition are morphological pieces accessed? Recent masked priming studies support models that assume early decomposition of (potentially) morphologically complex words. The electrophysiological evidence, however, is inconsistent. We combined masked morphological priming with magneto-encephalography (MEG),...

Extending models of visual-word recognition to semicursive scripts: Evidence from masked priming in Uyghur.

One basic feature of the Arabic script is its semicursive style: some letters are connected to the next, but others are not, as in the Uyghur word [see text]/ya xʃi/ ("good"). None of the current orthographic coding schemes in models of visual-word recognition, which were created for the Roman script, assign a differential role to the coding of within letter "chunks" and between letter "chunks"...

Resolving the locus of cAsE aLtErNaTiOn effects in visual word recognition: Evidence from masked priming.

Determining the factors that modulate the early access of abstract lexical representations is imperative for the formulation of a comprehensive neural account of visual-word identification. There is a current debate on whether the effects of case alternation (e.g., tRaIn vs. train) have an early or late locus in the word-processing stream. Here we report a lexical decision experiment using a te...
